A Practical 6-Step Program for Reducing Your Plastic Footprint & Fight for Our Oceans Health

1. Be smart

Start off by rethinking your relationship with all things plastic. Some things that are made out of plastics are essential, but most everyday plastic goods, especially disposables exist in another sustainable form or material.

Invest in durable utensils, containers, bottles and bags. Reusables made from glass, ceramic, paper, stainless steel, wood, and bamboo are better for the planet and for your health. If you like to cook, invest in stainless steel pans and glass or ceramic dishes and molds. You have the power to reduce your plastic impact by making the change today.

2. Be an actor of change

You can say “no straw please”, or “no thanks, I have my own bag”. You can choose to shop at eco-friendly stores.

You can also refuse to buy or use single-use bottles, bags, plastic Q-tips, ice cube bags, disposable razors, toothbrushes… Refuse products that contain microbeads for your personal hygiene. You can choose items that are not packaged in plastic. Alternatives exist, and more and more are on the market every day.

As consumers we all have the power to influence producers and make them understand that it’s time to stop polluting the planet.

3. Be good to yourself and the planet

Have a close look at your consumption habits. Cut out products that have too much plastic packagin.g Cook fresh food. Buy dried goods in bulk and stock in glass jars. Make your own cleaning products and cosmetics… They are healthier, cheaper and produce less plastic waste!

4. Be Creative

If you are DIY inclined you can find hundreds of ways to re-purpose products. Replace plastic sponges with pads woven out of old t-shirts., make bulk bags out of old clothing, … Have fun, invent, create art, make something new out of something old.

5. Be responsible & recycle

Always read your labels.

Sort and dispose of waste properly. Remember, plastic trash on the ground blows into waterways and ends up in the ocean, in streams, on highways, and multiple locations in the environment. 80% of plastic waste found in the oceans comes from land-based activities. Recycle whatever can be recycled.

6. Become an ambassador for our oceans

Inspire others by showing and telling what you are doing to reduce your plastic footprint. Talk to friends, family and strangers. Share what you are doing on social media. Start conversations. Tell others why it’s so important to reduce their plastic usage and what they can do to help save the ocean.
